Roofing Toolbox Talks
An OSHA-compliant Roofing safety talk you can read aloud Monday morning. Below is a full sample. Fresh ones are written every Monday for subscribers.
Heat Stress on the Roof: Early Warning Signs and What to Do
Why this week
Temperatures across most of the country jumped 10–15°F this past week. Roof surfaces hit 140°F+ even on a "75 degree day." Heat stress is the #1 May injury for roofing crews, and the cases that send guys to the ER usually started with symptoms that got ignored.
Three early warning signs to watch for
- Heavy sweating that suddenly stops. Skin going dry and hot is a red flag, not a sign someone is "fine now."
- Headache and dizziness. Especially if the guy says "I'm just tired." That's how it starts.
- Confusion or trouble following simple instructions. If a foreman has to repeat a basic call twice, get that worker off the roof.
Today's commitment
Cooler with ice, shaded break area on the ground, water within 50 feet of every worker, mandatory 10-min break every hour after 11 AM. Buddy check at every break: look at each other.

Roofing crews face hazards that change with the season, the job, and the industry as a whole. The talk above is what we'd send a Roofing crew this specific week. Next week's will be different, written for whatever's most relevant then.
If you write your own toolbox talks, here's a guide to what makes a Roofing toolbox talk crews actually listen to. The format that works: one specific hazard, tied to current conditions, ending with a concrete commitment for the day.
OSHA documentation requirements for Roofing
Under 29 CFR 1926.21(b), construction employers (including Roofing contractors) must instruct workers in hazard recognition and avoidance. A documented weekly toolbox talk with worker sign-in is the cleanest way to satisfy this requirement.
Each ToolboxMonday talk includes:
- Specific OSHA standards referenced (relevant to Roofing)
- Sign-in sheet for worker acknowledgment
- One-line entry for your safety log
- PDF + plain text format
