Plumbing Toolbox Talks
An OSHA-compliant Plumbing safety talk you can read aloud Monday morning. Below is a full sample. Fresh ones are written every Monday for subscribers.
Trench & Excavation Safety on Service Line Work
Why this week
Spring is trench season: sewer line repairs, water service installations, drain field work. OSHA reports that trench fatalities continue to be among the most preventable construction deaths, and the spring-summer push is when most of them happen. The ones that kill people happen in trenches under 10 feet, where guys assume they don't need protection.
The rules that prevent the death
- Anything 5 feet or deeper requires a protective system (slope, shore, or shield). No exceptions for "just a quick fix."
- Soil classification first. Type C soil can fail without warning. If you do not know the soil type, it's Type C until proven otherwise.
- Spoil pile at least 2 feet from the edge. Soil weight collapses the sidewall.
- Means of egress every 25 feet in trenches 4' or deeper. Ladder, ramp, or steps.
Today's commitment
Soil sample on first dig of the day. Trench box or sloping protocol confirmed before anyone enters. Spoil pile at least 2 feet from the edge. Inspector walk-through at the start and after any rain or vibration.

Plumbing crews face hazards that change with the season, the job, and the industry as a whole. The talk above is what we'd send a Plumbing crew this specific week. Next week's will be different, written for whatever's most relevant then.
If you write your own toolbox talks, here's a guide to what makes a Plumbing toolbox talk crews actually listen to. The format that works: one specific hazard, tied to current conditions, ending with a concrete commitment for the day.
OSHA documentation requirements for Plumbing
Under 29 CFR 1926.21(b), construction employers (including Plumbing contractors) must instruct workers in hazard recognition and avoidance. A documented weekly toolbox talk with worker sign-in is the cleanest way to satisfy this requirement.
Each ToolboxMonday talk includes:
- Specific OSHA standards referenced (relevant to Plumbing)
- Sign-in sheet for worker acknowledgment
- One-line entry for your safety log
- PDF + plain text format
