HVAC Toolbox Talks
An OSHA-compliant HVAC safety talk you can read aloud Monday morning. Below is a full sample. Fresh ones are written every Monday for subscribers.
Refrigerant Handling on Spring Service Calls
Why this week
We are in the first wave of cooling-season service calls. R-410A is being phased out and replaced with R-454B and R-32, both of which are mildly flammable (A2L classification). If you have been working with R-410A your entire career, the new refrigerants need a different mindset on a service call.
What is different about A2L refrigerants
- They burn. Not as easily as propane, but they burn. Open flame near a leak is a problem.
- Brazing requires purging the system with nitrogen first. Always was a best practice. Now it's a safety must.
- Ventilation matters. Confined spaces (basements, mechanical rooms) need air flow before you touch a charged system.
- Recovery equipment must be A2L-rated. Older recovery machines are not. Check before you connect.
Today's commitment
Electronic leak detectors charged and on every truck. Nitrogen tanks topped off. Section 608 cards in wallets. If you encounter A2L refrigerant for the first time and you're not sure, call before you cut.

HVAC crews face hazards that change with the season, the job, and the industry as a whole. The talk above is what we'd send a HVAC crew this specific week. Next week's will be different, written for whatever's most relevant then.
If you write your own toolbox talks, here's a guide to what makes a HVAC toolbox talk crews actually listen to. The format that works: one specific hazard, tied to current conditions, ending with a concrete commitment for the day.
OSHA documentation requirements for HVAC
Under 29 CFR 1926.21(b), construction employers (including HVAC contractors) must instruct workers in hazard recognition and avoidance. A documented weekly toolbox talk with worker sign-in is the cleanest way to satisfy this requirement.
Each ToolboxMonday talk includes:
- Specific OSHA standards referenced (relevant to HVAC)
- Sign-in sheet for worker acknowledgment
- One-line entry for your safety log
- PDF + plain text format
